Face lifting
Facelifts in Madrid make it possible to rejuvenate the face. The effects of age and exposure to the sun, among other factors, affect the skin, but there is a solution. This technique offers natural results and it is possible to associate it with other treatments for greater patient satisfaction. This is one of the surgeries we perform at Dr. Miguel Fernández Calderón’s Cosmetic Surgery Clinic.
What does a facelift in Madrid consist of?
Despite the many mesotherapy treatments that currently exist, the facelift continues to be of great importance in facial rejuvenation. It is the only technique that allows us to reposition sagging tissues at the level of the cheekbone, lip fold, jaw line and neck. All this without the need for excessive fillers that can be unnatural and extravagant.
The facelift is performed through incisions located within the hair or in natural folds of the skin, making them imperceptible. In addition, it is now often associated with procedures such as jowl liposuction and lipofilling. It therefore allows very harmonious results with minimal scarring (mini-lifting). However, in certain cases, somewhat larger scars are required.
When this facelift surgery is performed, excess skin is removed. In addition, the muscles are also tightened, thus reducing the signs of ageing and giving the face greater vitality.
The incisions, although permanent, are usually hidden under the hairline or in the natural contours of the face and ear. They are rarely noticeable and in that case corticosteroid injection or other treatments are used to improve the appearance of these scars.
The surgery, which may be associated with other procedures on the eyelids or eyebrows to make the result more uniform, usually lasts between 3 and 6 hours. It also requires a day’s stay in hospital, although some mini-liftings can be performed on an outpatient basis.
It usually requires a few days rest with a return to normal activity in 7 to 10 days.

Why have a facelift?
As you age the appearance and shape of your face changes due to normal aging changes. Your skin becomes less elastic and more saggy. Fat deposits decrease in some areas and increase in others.
Some age-related changes in your face that can be reduced with a facelift are:
- Sunken appearance of your cheeks.
- Excess skin in the lower jawline and jowls.
- A deepening of the skin fold on the side of the nose towards the corner of the mouth.
- Sagging of the skin and excess fat in the neck.
A facelift is not a treatment for superficial wrinkles, sun damage or irregularities in skin tone. It is a surgery to treat major problems in the face due to ageing.
Getting ready for this facial rejuvenation surgery
As with any cosmetic surgery, the steps prior to the operation include a pre-operative visit with the surgeon to discuss your medical history. The doctor will ask you a series of questions, perform a physical examination, and more.
You should discuss any medications you take, and you’ll probably be asked to stop taking some before surgery, such as aspirin.
The surgeon will examine your face, take pictures of you from different angles. He or she will look in detail at your bone structure, the shape of your face, fat distribution and the quality of your skin, and determine the best options for your facelift.
It is important that you have clear expectations before surgery. And that you comply with all of the doctor’s requests in the hours and days before the facelift.

What to expect after facelift in Madrid?
After surgery you may experience mild to moderate pain, incisional drainage, swelling, bruising and numbness of the face.
You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe pain on one side of your face or neck within 24 hours of surgery. Also if you experience shortness of breath, chest pain or irregular heartbeat.
The incisions will be covered with bandages that apply gentle pressure to minimise swelling and bruising.
In the days following surgery, it is recommended that you rest with your head elevated and take any medication recommended by your doctor. You can also apply cold compresses to reduce pain and swelling.
In general, after facelift surgery it is best to wear clothes that button at the front, avoid wearing make-up and sun exposure for at least three weeks and use sunscreen.
Also avoid activities that require a lot of movement, such as sports.
Go to follow-up appointments as recommended by your doctor. He or she will check your dressings, drains and incisions. And the doctor will let you know when it’s time to return to your daily activities.
Facial rejuvenation surgery can give your neck and face a much more youthful appearance. Although the results are not permanent, because over time the skin can sag again, but not as quickly, it is estimated to last for at least ten years.
